Cell Phone/Electronic Device Usage
Per IC 20-26-5-40.7, personal wireless communication devices are prohibited during instructional time. A teacher may authorize use of a wireless communication device for educational purposes. Personal wireless communication devices may be used by students in the event of a school-wide crisis. Students needing wireless communication devices to manage their own healthcare should have the need noted in an educational plan (S504/IEP).
Students at Wood Memorial Primary and Intermediate are prohibited from having personal wireless communication devices during the school day from 7:30 to 3:00.
Personal wireless communication devices include: cellular phones, tablet computers, laptop computers, gaming devices, smartwatches, and items as determined by WM Administration.
- 1st Offense – Students are issued a classroom warning by the instructor.
- 2nd Offense (1st Office Referral) - Phone taken from student and will be housed in office safe until parent or guardian can pick it up.
Any inappropriate use of the cell phone, including, but not limited to, inappropriate photographs, inappropriate text messaging and recording/videotaping will result in confiscation of the phone; further consequences including potential law enforcement interaction. Failure of a student to comply with a faculty/staff request to turn over a cell phone or electronic device may result in suspension. If a student loses cell phone privileges and continues to use the device, he/she will be subject to suspension or expulsion from school for substantial disobedience.
The administration may use its discretion to allow or prohibit the use of any of the devices discussed here as conditions may warrant. A student may lose the right to use the device for up to the remainder of the school year.
The school administration reserves the right to intercede in any situation in which a Wood Memorial student posts any information on any electronic information source (i.e. the internet, text messages, blogging, websites or others) that bullies, slanders, or interferes with the school climate in any way. The discipline policy may be enforced in such cases as needed.
